City Council to discuss AMD plans today...

The Austin City Council has scheduled an executive session discussion for today on legal issues related to the Southwest Austin site where Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to build a major office complex.

AMD's decision has been controversial because the land, in the Lantana development, is in an environmentally sensitive watershed area.

A two-year-old child who spent the past week at the Penang Prison with her mother has now been “freed” and placed under her uncle's care.

The girl was brought to the magistrate's court yesterday with her mother, 44, who faces a drug trafficking charge.

Defence counsel K. Saravana Kumar told magistrate M. Rajalingam that the woman's younger brother would take care of the child.

HOUSTON (AP) - A driver facing negligent homicide charges in a bus fire that killed 23 nursing home patients during the Hurricane Rita evacuation agreed Wednesday to help federal investigators.

Juan Robles Gutierrez, 37, a Mexican national, was detained in Houston as a material witness to the investigation, though neither his attorney nor prosecutors would give details about the probe.
